Featuring creamy, stone-ground grits and succulent shrimp seasoned with a hint of Cajun spice, this dish is a perfect blend of comfort and flavor. Discover why this beloved recipe has been a favorite for generations and how it continues to charm food lovers with its simplicity and richness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • ½ cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 4 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • ¼ cup green onions, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pinch of Cajun seasoning or to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Grits:

    • In a medium saucepan, bring the chicken broth and milk to a boil. Gradually whisk in the grits, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thick and creamy, about 20-25 minutes.
    • Stir in 2 tablespoons of butter and the grated cheese until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Cook the Shrimp:

    • In a large skillet, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
    • Increase heat to medium-high, add shrimp and season with Cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook until shrimp are pink and opaque, about 2 minutes per side.
  3. Assemble and Serve:

    • Spoon grits onto plates, top with cooked shrimp, garnish with crumbled bacon and green onions.

Notes

  • For a creamier texture, you can add more cheese or butter to the grits.
  • Feel free to adjust the level of Cajun seasoning according to your taste preferences.
  • If stone-ground grits are unavailable, substitute with another type of coarse-ground grits but avoid instant grits for best results.
